A balance bike is often a child's first step toward independent cycling. Choosing the right one depends less on looks and more on fit, weight and a few simple safety checks.
Measure the child's inseam while standing in shoes. The lowest seat position should be about 2–3 cm below that measurement so both feet can rest flat on the ground.
A good rule is that the bike should weigh no more than about 30% of the child's body weight. A lighter frame is easier to steer, lift and stop.
Air or foam tyres both work; air tyres absorb bumps better, foam tyres need no maintenance. Look for smooth welds, rounded edges and a steering limiter for younger riders.
Confirm that bolts are covered, grips have end caps, and the handlebar height can be adjusted as the child grows. Always ride with a properly fitted helmet.
